Mar Vista Nursery

Having completed the clients kitchen and living spaces previously we were thrilled to be asked back for a second phase converting a studio space into the nursery. The design concept for the nursery evolved to align with the existing aesthetic of the home and the abundance of natural light. We found inspiration in the quiet and stillness of Japanese design characterized by its minimalism, simplicity, and focus on materiality to create a serene and harmonious environment. The lighting was chosen to give a warm soft glow, which comes through the resin shade in the"Taraxacum" cocoon pendant by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos and the natural linen shades on the Workstead sconces. Incorporating more textural elements and tonal colour in this space we chose warm natural woods for the custom end table, sliding doors and a butter tan leather on their custom changing table (practical and soft edged) The Kyle Bunting cow hide rug in custom colors was selected to be durable and soft under foot. We looked at Jean Prouvé for our door designs, incorporating circles in a mix of mahogany and brass into the solid Douglas Fir door, with the idea that this space should be a rich sensory environment for the baby.

All pieces were chosen with the intention of growing with the family, when fitting, the clients can move the Mah Jong sofa out of the nursery and add additional pieces, the custom console table can be adapted to remove the internal diaper pail and the end table is a piece that can be utilised in any part of their home. The emphasis on sustainable pieces that hopefully become family heirlooms is an integral starting point for all of our designs.
